Katanning is a town located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. It is situated approximately 277 km south-east of Perth and 48 km north of Albany. The town has a rich history dating back to the pre-colonial era.

The local Noongar people, who are the traditional owners of the land, lived in the area for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers. They had a rich culture and lifestyle, which included hunting and gathering, fishing, and trading with other Aboriginal groups along the coast.

When European settlers arrived in the area, they established the town of Katanning in the late 19th century. It was named after a local Noongar leader, Kartanup, who helped the early settlers establish themselves in the region.

The early settlers were mainly farmers who grew crops such as wheat, barley, and oats, and raised livestock such as sheep and cattle. They also built various infrastructure projects such as roads, schools, and churches to support the development of the town.

One key event in the town's history was the arrival of the railway in 1889. This opened up the town to new markets and enabled the farmers to transport their produce more easily. It also brought an influx of new people to the region, which helped to boost the local economy.

Another key event in the town's history was the establishment of the Katanning Aboriginal Mission in 1893. This was a government-run institution that aimed to assimilate the Noongar people into European society. The mission had a significant impact on the local Noongar community, and many families were separated as a result of the policies implemented by the government.

During the 20th century, the town continued to grow and develop. In the 1920s and 1930s, it became a hub for the wool industry, with many wool stores and warehouses being built in the town. It was also during this time that the town's iconic 'Kattanning' sign was erected on the hill overlooking the town.

During World War II, the town played an important role in the war effort. It was home to a number of military camps, and many young men from the area served in the armed forces. The town also played a role in the war effort by producing food and other resources to support the troops.

In the post-war period, the town continued to grow and develop. It became a hub for the agricultural industry, with many farmers in the area diversifying into new crops such as canola and lupins. The town also became a popular tourist destination, with many people coming to see its historic landmarks and natural beauty.

Today, Katanning is a thriving regional centre that is home to a diverse range of industries and businesses. It is also a popular tourist destination, with many people coming to see its historic landmarks and natural beauty. The town has a rich history that is celebrated by locals and visitors alike.
